About Maplewood

A small team, on purpose.

We run five or six projects at a time, never more. That way the person who quotes your job is the one who sees it through.

Our story

“We started Maplewood after a decade on big building sites, watching kitchens get rushed and bathrooms get patched. We wanted to build fewer rooms, and build them properly.”

Tom Whitfield, founder & registered builder

Maplewood began in 2009 as Tom and one apprentice working out of a ute in Kew. Seventeen years on, we’re a team of eleven: designers, project managers and our own carpenters, plus a small group of licensed trades we’ve worked alongside for years.

We still work only in Melbourne’s inner east, mostly within 15 minutes of our Kew workshop. That means we know the period homes, the council permit quirks and the suppliers, and we’re never far away if something needs a second look after handover.

  • Owner-led. Tom still visits every site, every week.
  • Never more than six builds running at once
  • Most of our work comes from referrals and repeat clients

Our process

Five stages, no surprises.

From the first call to the three-month check-in, this is what working with us looks like.

  1. Free design consult · week 0

We visit your home, measure up, look at the structure and services, and give you an honest budget range before we leave.

  2. Design & fixed quote · weeks 1–3

Elena prepares concept drawings and a finishes schedule. You get an itemised fixed price and a written build schedule.

  3. Selections & ordering · weeks 3–6

We take you to our stone, tile and tapware suppliers. Joinery goes into production in our workshop.

  4. The build · 3–10 weeks

Priya runs the site day to day. You get a written update every Friday and a clean, dust-sealed site every evening.

  5. Handover & aftercare

A final walkthrough, warranty documents and care guides, then a three-month visit to adjust anything that needs it.
